What Should I Bring to My First Hair Appointment in Victorville?

Your first visit to Mood Beauty, a hair salon in Victorville, goes smoothly when a few things are already on your phone. Photos, a little history, and the truth about the box dye. That's most of it.

The rest is small stuff: what to wear, when to eat, and what to say once you're in the chair. This is a companion to our guide, What Happens at Your First Visit to Mood Beauty, which walks through the appointment itself. The prep below is the part you do at home.

What do I need to have with me for a first visit?

Bring two or three photos of hair you love and one photo of hair you don't. Add an honest hair history, box dye included. At Mood Beauty, those three things let our stylists build a plan early in your consultation instead of guessing. Everything else you bring sharpens that plan.

We don't rush that conversation. We plan before we touch your hair, and the more you bring, the better that plan gets. The consultation is the part of a first visit we put the most care into. It sets up everything that follows.

Here is what we like to see, roughly in order of usefulness:

  1. Two or three photos of hair you love, in different lighting if you can.
  2. One photo of hair you don't want. Knowing what to steer clear of narrows the plan fast.
  3. The dates of your last color, and whether it was salon color or a box.
  4. The products you use at home, even if it's drugstore shampoo. No shame here. We just want to know what your hair is used to.
  5. A note on how you style your hair on a normal weekday, and how much time you give it.
  6. Your questions. Write them down, because they vanish the second you sit in the chair.
  7. Any past service that went wrong. No judgment, we just want to know what to avoid.

Not sure what you like yet? Scroll through examples of our work on Instagram and screenshot anything that catches your eye. We'd rather see ten screenshots than hear "a little lighter, but natural." That phrase means something different to everyone.

What can I do the night before?

A ten-minute prep makes the consultation faster. Do these in order:

  1. Put your inspiration photos in one album, so you aren't scrolling past your dog to find them. We love the dog, though.
  2. Write down the date and type of your last color, even if you can only guess the month.
  3. Snap a picture of the labels on your shampoo, conditioner, and heat protectant.
  4. Resist the urge to fix things with box dye or a home trim. We get it. Another layer just gives us one more thing to read through.

Done right, you walk in with everything on one screen and a short list of questions. You're ready.

Why does my hair history matter so much?

What's already in your hair decides what is safe to do next. Box color, past bleach, and smoothing treatments all change how hair takes new color. Skip the history and we are working blind.

Old box dye builds up in layers you can't see from the outside. Box color is made to coat the whole head at once. So every new box goes over the ends again, while the roots get only one coat. When lightener goes on, each of those layers lifts at its own speed. That's where patchy warmth comes from. Orange or red can show up wherever old pigment hangs on.

Banding is the other giveaway. It's a stripe of different color where one application stopped and the next began. You may not notice it on dark hair. Lightener finds it fast.

That's why a strand test on a hidden section is so useful. It shows us how that hair lifts and what tone it lands on. We see that before we commit to a formula for your whole head.

With a full history, we plan for those layers before anything goes on. With gaps, we find them mid-service. Then we slow down and rework the plan. Sometimes that means stopping for the day to protect your hair.

Your history also tells us which appointment you need. A Toner Refresh, Custom Dimensional Color, and Color Correction are separate services on our menu. The right one depends on what's already in your hair.

So tell us all of it. Nobody here is judging, and our salon stays gossip-free on purpose. We have heard every home-color story there is, and we still want to hear yours.

Sometimes the honest answer is two visits. The integrity of your hair is the most important thing to us. If you're heading from dark hair to a much lighter shade, one session rarely does it safely. We will get you there safely, even if it takes two visits.

Coming in to fix color that went sideways? Read what a color correction involves first. Expect a conversation before any color touches your hair. You're in good hands.

How should I show up for the appointment?

Show up as you normally are, with a few small changes. Each one saves us time or protects your result.

  • Your hair, as usual: Style it the way you would on a regular weekday. We see how it falls and where it fights you.
  • Curly hair: Arrive with your curls dry and in their usual shape. Our curly specialists study them dry first, noting where they spring up and where they stretch. That happens before any scissors come out. Curls change shape once they're wet, so a plan made on wet hair can land differently. Here is why we cut every curl dry.
  • Your top: Wear a button-front or a loose neckline. A tight neckline has to be tugged back over your head past damp hair or fresh color. That can smear product onto the fabric and onto your neck.
  • Your day: Eat first and charge your phone. Color has processing time where you sit and wait. An empty stomach makes that wait feel longer, right when we ask you to choose a tone.
  • Extensions or color correction: Let's book a consultation first. For extensions, the Hair Extension Consultation on our menu is made for this. Our extension specialists want to see your length, density, and growth pattern before picking a method. That matters because extension methods differ a lot.
  • Lashes: Bring a photo of the set you like. Our lash artists check the health of your natural lashes first. If they need a break, we'll tell you plainly.

Not sure which stylist fits? Meet our curly, extension, and color specialists on the team page, then match the specialty to what you want.

What do people get wrong before a first visit?

The usual misses are bringing one photo, hiding the box dye, expecting everything in one sitting, and skipping the home-care talk. Each one is easy to fix.

Bringing one photo. A single photo can mislead. Salon lighting, filters, and a different starting color all change how a photo looks. Three photos show us the pattern.

Hiding the box dye. It's the thing guests leave out most, usually out of embarrassment. It also changes our formula more than almost anything else. Leave it out and the surprise shows up in the bowl, not the consultation.

Expecting everything in one sitting. Big changes take time when the integrity of your hair comes first. We will tell you plainly if your goal needs a second visit.

Skipping the home-care talk. We want you to leave feeling confident. That includes knowing how to keep the result at home with products we recommend. Ask. That's part of the visit.

Ask your questions while we work, too. We provide in-salon education, so explaining the why behind a choice is a habit here. If you'd like to know why we're toning, sectioning, or cutting a certain way, we'll show you. Our salon policies are also worth a quick read before you come in, so nothing about the visit surprises you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to bring photos?

No. Photos help, but they aren't required. They give us a shared language faster than any description. If you don't have any, we'll talk through what you like and look at your hair together.

Should I wash my hair before I come?

No. Come with your hair the way you'd normally wear it, and we shampoo as the service calls for it. If you have heavy product buildup, mention it at the consultation.

Can I ask what my service will cost before we start?

Yes. Our service menu shows current pricing, and the final plan depends on your hair's length, density, and history. We'll talk it through before we begin.

What if my hair needs more than one visit?

We'll tell you up front and map out the steps together. Safe color and healthy hair beat a fast result. Many changes, especially going much lighter, are done in stages.
