What Happens During a Hair Consultation?
Share
Before we pick up scissors for a curly client, we look at the curls dry. Before we mix color for a correction, we may test a single strand. That is the consultation at Mood Beauty in Victorville, and it happens before anything gets touched.
It's a conversation before it's a service. For the full picture of what correction work involves, read What Is a Hair Color Correction? A Victorville Salon's Guide.
What Does a Hair Consultation Involve at Mood Beauty?
A hair consultation at Mood Beauty is a sit-down conversation before any service starts. We look at your hair, ask about its history and your daily routine, and build the plan around what we find. A simple cut takes a short one. Color correction and extensions take longer, and we don't watch the clock.
A quick chat is faster. It also means we're guessing instead of knowing, and a wrong guess costs you another appointment to fix. We'd rather take the time up front.
We start with your hair's history, not just the photo you brought in. What color is on it now? What's been done in the last year? Maybe a keratin treatment, or a box touch-up at home between visits. All of it changes what we can safely do today. Skipping this step is how appointments go sideways.
Then we talk about your life. How much time do you spend on your hair each morning? Are you growing it out, chopping it off, or just tired of fighting it every week? A client who wants low upkeep gets a different plan than a client chasing a big transformation.
Two clients can walk in holding the same blonde photo and leave with different plans. That's how it should be. How you live with your hair matters more than the color chart.
How Does the Consultation Change From Service to Service?
The consultation changes with the service. We have curly specialists, extension specialists, and color specialists on staff, and each one checks something different before you're in the chair.
A curly cut consultation is mostly hands. We check your curl pattern dry, before any water touches it, and watch how it clumps and falls on its own. Then we ask about your wash-day routine. That order matters. A curly cut lives or dies on how you style it at home, so we want your routine before we plan the shape.
A color correction consultation is mostly light. We look at your hair under real light first, not the light by the mirror. Sometimes we run a strand test before committing to anything. A strand test is a small section of hair colored on its own, so we see how it reacts before the whole head goes through the same process.
We read two things from that strand. The first is how many levels of lift your hair took before it started to feel weak or stretchy. The second is how the tone grabbed: clean and even, or warm, patchy, and muddy. An even strand tells us the plan can go ahead. A strand that turns brassy or goes gummy tells us to slow down. We add a step, or split the work across two visits. That answer is different for every client.
A dimensional blonde works the same way. The result starts at the consultation, not in the chair. We map out the placement before we ever mix a bowl.
Extensions get their own step. If you're thinking about hair extensions in Victorville, the Hair Extension Consultation is its own listing on our menu. It's where we talk through whether full length or volume only fits what you're hoping for. Let's start with a consultation so we can build the perfect plan for your hair.

When Does a Consultation Turn Into a Two-Visit Plan?
A consultation turns into a two-visit plan when getting you to your goal safely takes more than one appointment. We tell you that at the consultation, not halfway through the service. Going from dark to platinum is the classic example. We never promise blonde in the first visit.
Here's what changes between the two visits. The first one takes your hair as far as it can safely lift that day. Before the second, we check how your hair handled that first round, how it feels, and how it held up at home. Then we plan the next step from where your hair is, not from where we hoped it would be.
The integrity of your hair is the most important thing to us, more than finishing fast. That goes for a big color change, and it goes for a first set of extensions too. We'd rather you leave the consultation knowing the real plan than leave the chair disappointed because we rushed.
That standard runs from our founder, Crystal VanBrimmer, through every stylist on the floor. One of our clients described the salon this way in a Google review: "MOOD Salon is such a MOOD! The staff is knowledgeable, and truly cares about the service that is given, whether it be your lashes, or your hair. This quaint salon is definitely worth checking out."
What to Bring, and the One Question We Always Ask
The most useful things to bring are photos and an honest answer about your routine. Bring photos of hair you like, and photos of hair you don't. Seeing what you want to avoid often tells us more than one inspiration photo ever could.
That answer about your routine matters just as much. Maybe you flat iron every day, or maybe you've never touched a heat tool in your life. Either way, just tell us. It shapes the plan more than you'd think.
With 21+ years of experience, we've made one question a habit. We ask every client, new or returning: have you used a box color or an at-home gloss in the last two weeks? It isn't a formality.
Here's why two weeks. Box color is built to be permanent, and the pigment it leaves behind isn't always where you'd expect. Lightener has to fight through it, and it doesn't lift evenly, so fresh box color can leave warm bands or patches. In our experience, color applied in the last two weeks changes our plan more than anything else, so we ask every time.
For certain color services we'll also talk through a patch test. A patch test is a small dab of color mixture placed on your skin, usually behind the ear. It's left for a day or two. If your skin reacts, we know before the same formula ever touches your scalp.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to book a separate appointment just for the consultation?
No, not for most services. The consultation happens at the start of your regular appointment. Extensions are the exception, since the Hair Extension Consultation is its own service. For color correction, we sometimes talk through the plan before booking the full appointment, so the time set aside matches the work.
What if I don't know exactly what I want yet?
That's normal, and it's still a useful conversation. Tell us what you're tired of and what you loved about your hair before. We'll build toward that together, so you can sit back and relax while we figure it out.
Will my stylist tell me if my goal isn't realistic in one visit?
Yes. If a change needs more than one appointment to do safely, we tell you at the consultation. That's before any color or scissors come out. You're in good hands either way, whether that's one visit or two.
Does the consultation cost anything extra?
No, not for most services, because it's part of your appointment. The one to check is extensions, where the Hair Extension Consultation is listed on its own. What the full service costs depends on what you're having done and how much work your hair needs. It's all laid out on our service menu.
